At the age of 18 he left Hungary and travelled across Europe and North Africa, finally settling in Paris where he became interested in photography. De Dienes began work as a professional photographer for the Communist newspaper L’Humanité, and was employed by the Associated Press until 1936, when the Parisian couturier Captain Molyneux noted his work and urged him to become a fashion photographer. In 1938 the editor of Esquire, Arnold Gingrich offered him work in New York City, and helped fund De Dienes’ passage to the United States. Once in the United States De Dienes worked for Vogue and Life magazines as well as Esquire. Dissatisfied with his life as a fashion photographer in New York, Andre moved to California in 1944, where he began to specialize in nudes and landscapes. In 1945 De Dienes met the nineteen-year-old Marilyn Monroe, then called Norma Jean Baker, who was a model on the books of Emmeline Snively’s Blue Book Model Agency. He began photographing her and they continued the photographer/model relationship for until her untimely death in 1962. His photographs of Monroe are widely considered to be some of the best images ever made of the iconic star. In addition to Monroe, De Dienes had another muse in the well known pin-up model Shirley Levitt who became De Dienes second wife. They were married until the end of his life. After meeting her at a party in Greenwich Village the two embarked on a lengthy photo-shoot trip down the west coast of Florida producing what legendary photographer of the nude Peter Basch called “the finest outdoor nudes ever made alongside the Betty Page photographs shot by Bunny Yeager in the Florida Keys”. As well as Monroe and Levitt, De Dienes also photographed such notable actors and actresses as Elizabeth Taylor, Marlon Brando, Henry Fonda, Shirley Temple, Ingrid Bergman, Ronald Reagan, Jane Russell, Anita Ekberg and Fred Astaire. De Dienes married twice, and died of cancer on April 11, 1985, in Hollywood, California. In 2002, Taschen published a massive 848-page two-volume monograph on his work with Marilyn Monroe. ABOUT ANDRE DE DIENES Andre De Dienes was born in Hungary in 1913. At the age of 18 he left Hungary and travelled across Europe and North Africa, finally settling in Paris where he became interested in photography. De Dienes began work as a professional photographer for the Communist newspaper L’Humanité, and was employed by the Associated Press until 1936, when the Parisian couturier Captain Molyneux noted his work and urged him to become a fashion photographer. In 1938 the editor of Esquire, Arnold Gingrich offered him work in New York City, and helped fund De Dienes’ passage to the United States. Once in the United States De Dienes worked for Vogue and Life magazines as well as Esquire. Dissatisfied with his life as a fashion photographer in New York, Andre moved to California in 1944, where he began to specialize in nudes and landscapes. In 1945 De Dienes met the nineteen-year-old Marilyn Monroe, then called Norma Jean Baker, who was a model on the books of Emmeline Snively’s Blue Book Model Agency. He began photographing her and they continued the photographer/model relationship for until her untimely death in 1962. His photographs of Monroe are widely considered to be some of the best images ever made of the iconic star. In addition to Monroe, De Dienes had another muse in the well known pin-up model Shirley Levitt who became De Dienes second wife. They were married until the end of his life. After meeting her at a party in Greenwich Village the two embarked on a lengthy photo-shoot trip down the west coast of Florida producing what legendary photographer of the nude Peter Basch called “the finest outdoor nudes ever made alongside the Betty Page photographs shot by Bunny Yeager in the Florida Keys”. As well as Monroe and Levitt, De Dienes also photographed such notable actors and actresses as Elizabeth Taylor, Marlon Brando, Henry Fonda, Shirley Temple, Ingrid Bergman, Ronald Reagan, Jane Russell, Anita Ekberg and Fred Astaire. De Dienes married twice, and died of cancer on April 11, 1985, in Hollywood, California. In recent years, Andre De Dienes photography has received overdue critical attention from a variety of sources. In 2002, Taschen published a massive 848-page two-volume monograph on his work with Marilyn Monroe. A new exhibition, entitled “André de Dienes: Marilyn and California Girls,” opened June 9, 2016 at the Steven Kasher Gallery in New York City, representing the first solo show of photographer Andre de Dienes in New York in over ten years. About George Platt Lynes (from Wiki): George Platt Lynes was an American fashion, commercial and fine art photographer. Born in East Orange, New Jersey in 1907, he spent his childhood in New Jersey but attended the Berkshire School in Massachusetts. He was sent to Paris in 1925 with the idea of better preparing him for college. His life was forever changed by the circle of friends that he would meet there. Gertrude Stein, Glenway Wescott, Monroe Wheeler and those that he met through them opened an entirely new world to the young artist. He returned to the United States with the idea of a literary career and he even opened a bookstore in Englewood, New Jersey in 1927. He first became interested in photography not with the idea of a career, but to take photographs of his friends and display them in his bookstore. Returning to France the next year, he traveled around Europe for the next several years, always with his camera at hand. He developed close friendships within a larger circle of artists including Jean Cocteau and Julien Levy, the art dealer and critic. Levy would exhibit his photographs in his gallery in New York City in 1932 and Lynes would open his studio there that same year. He was soon receiving commissions from Harper’s Bazaar, Town & Country, and Vogue including a cover with perhaps the first supermodel, Lisa Fonssagrives. In 1935 he was asked to document the principal dancers and productions of Lincoln Kirstein’s and George Balanchine’s newly founded American Ballet company (now the New York City Ballet). While he continued to shoot fashion photographs during the 1930s and 1940s, he was losing interest and had started a series of photographs which interpreted characters and stories from Greek mythology. By 1946, he grew disillusioned with New York and left for Hollywood, where he became chief photographer for the Vogue studios. He photographed Katharine Hepburn, Rosalind Russell, Gloria Swanson and Orson Welles, from the film industry, as well as others in the arts among them Aldous Huxley, Igor Stravinsky, and Thomas Mann. While this work was a success artistically, it was a financial failure. His friends helped him to move back to New York City in 1948. Other photographers, such as Richard Avedon, Edgar de Evia and Irving Penn, had taken his place in the fashion world. This combined with his disinterest in commercial work, meant he was never able to regain the successes he once had. During his lifetime, Lynes amassed a substantial body of work involving nude and homoerotic photography. In the 1930s, he began taking nudes of friends, performers and models, although these remained private, unknown and unpublished for years. In May of 1955, Lynes was diagnosed terminally ill with lung cancer. He closed his studio and destroyed much of his print and negative archives, particularly his male nudes. After a final trip to Europe, Lynes returned to New York City, where he died. He is interred in a substantial stone sarcophagus at Woodlawn Cemetery, Bronx, New York.
