William Wegman was born in Holyoke, Massachusetts, in 1943. While living in Long Beach, California, Wegman acquired Man Ray, the dog with whom he began a fruitful twelve-year collaboration. In 1972, Wegman and Man Ray moved to New York.

She has been an Artist in Residence at the Banff Centre for the Arts in Canada and participated in the Artist in the Marketplace program at the Bronx Museum of the Arts. Dorthe has exhibited work in Australia, Denmark, Canada, England, Japan, and the U.S. Dorthe lives in Denmark with her husband, Keith, and daughter, Maya Kirstine.
