Original 20th Century JAMES VANDERZEE Style Photograph of African American Men

ORIGINAL JAMES VANDERZEE STYLE PHOTOGRAPH OF A GROUP OF AFRICAN AMERICAN GENTLEMEN This is just a great original piece. I recently acquired a collection of photographs from important African American photographer Calvin Littlejohn. Littlejohn was known for his important work documenting African American life in San Antonio Texas in the mid 20th Century. I acquired a few photographs of Martin Luther’s King trip to San Antonio by Littlejohn that I am not sure I am going to sell yet (if you might be interested, reach out). This is a wonderful early 20th Century photograph of a group of well dressed African American gentlemen. Actually when I saw the photograph, I thought it must be by Vanderzee but would have no idea of confirming as there is no signature on the image. It really looks just like his work. Large gelatin silver photograph measuring 9 x 13 1/4 inches. Outstanding rich print in excellent condition. Verso has remnants of paper from an attached backing. Really just a wonderful photograph. Here we have a silver halide photo of soldier, and musician, Christian Fleetwood. He was born in Baltimore in 1840 and was well educated. He enlisted in the Army in August 1863, and was promoted to Sergeant Major a few days later. He was a member of the 4th Regiment United States Colored Infantry. He was awarded the Congressional Medal Of Honor for his actions at the Battle of Chaffin’s Farm on September 29, 1864. He passed away in 1914 at the age of 74. His Medal Of Honor citation read: Rank and organization: Sergeant Major, 4th U.S. Colored Troops Place and date: At Chapins Farm, Va., 29 September 1864 Entered service at: ——. Date of issue: 6 April 1865 Citation: Seized the colors, after 2 color bearers had been shot down, and bore them nobly through the fight. Isaiah Mays African American Indian Wars Congressional Medal of Honor Winner All photographs are processed at a professional photo lab and have standard white borders unless otherwise stated. We DO NOT sell desktop printer, discount chain or kiosk processed photos. Here we have a photo of Buffalo Soldier, Isaiah Mays. Born into slavery, Mays joined the Army and had attained the rank of Corporal. On May 11, 1889, he was one of the soldiers involved in the fighting during the Wham Paymaster Robbery. He survived the incident, passing away in 1925 at the age of 67. His remains were later (2009) exhumed and interred in Arlington National Cemetery. His Medal Of Honor citation read: Rank and organization: Corporal, Company B, 24th U.S. Infantry. Place and date: Arizona, 11 May 1889. Entered service at: Columbus Barracks, Ohio. Born: 16 February 1858, Carters Bridge, Va. Date of issue: 19 February 1890. Citation: Gallantry in the fight between Paymaster Wham’s escort and robbers.
