Vintage black and white silver gelatin photograph by Lithuanian photographer Antanas Sutkus (born 1939). Photo identified, in Sutkus’ own script, as “the merry musician in the demonstrations after the Congress of Sajuedi, 1988,10.22,” which relates to the independence movement in Lithuania as it broke away from the Soviet Union. Photo comes matted and framed and under glass, measuring 15″ by 10.25″, with the total dimensions with black painted wood frame 22.75″ by 18.25″. Photo is signed and identified by Sutkus, though the signature and titling is underneath the framing paper on the back (the framer copied what was written on photo’s verso, and that is viewable on verso). In fine condition, with only minor wear to frame. Sutkus is Lithuania’s preeminent Postwar photographer and has exhibited around the world. His photos regularly come up for sale at European auction houses, from Sotheby’s to Lempertz, where they consistently outperform auction estimates (signifying that is work is consistently increasing in demand and value). Numerous monographs have been published. He’s especially known for his images of the people of Lithuania from the early 60’s through the independence movement of the late 80’s.
