Josef Sudek Silver Print – Arches
Beautiful Josef Sudek Image – Silver Gelatin Print DESCRIPTION: Josef Sudek (1896-1976) is perhaps the best known of all Czech art photographers. Originally trained as a bookbinder, he lost an arm in the First World War and was unable to continue in that profession. He studied photography in Prague and worked throughout the 1920s creating the idealized pictorial images of the city for which he would become famous. In the 1930s he was active in commercial and advertising photography and in this work displayed a more modernist aesthetic. He became known in the west following shows in the 1970s at the George Eastman House and the LIGHT gallery in NYC. His work has been the subject of many books. In 1977, Pressfoto, Prague, the publisher, issued a portfolio containing twelve well-known Sudek images. This print was extracted from one of these portfolios. Though they have been wrongly termed bromoil prints, chemical tests reveal they are unquestionably silver gelatin prints. Though they are not, of course, original vintage prints, they are very beautifully crafted and look amazing when matted and framed.
