I grew up on Orange lake. I have Orange lake water in my blood. I lived there til I was 11 years old. My parents divorced and my dad re married. We moved up to Salt Point NY but my Grand parents still lived on the lake so my summers were spent down at the lake with my Grand parents. The summers of my junior and senior years in High School I taught a whole bunch of my classmates to ski on Orange Lake. at 18 I joined the Navy. I’d come home on leave and go down to the lake skiing. When I returned in 1993 I lived in my Grandparents old house for the next 12 years. There were issues beyond my control that forced me to move away from the lake and I miss it terribly but I still have a cousin on the lake for when I need a fix. Sunset on Orange Lake outside of Newburgh. This is one of my favorite old photos. This pic is from 1995 1996 time frame. It was one of those days on the lake just perfect for sailing. Sailing Fast! My cousin had a prindle cat 16 and another neighbor on the lake had this Hobie 16. We all spent most of the day out on the lake racing. My cousin and another neighbor on the Prindle and the other neighbor and a friend on the Hobie. I was in a motor boat chasing them around most of the day taking pictures. I have a bunch of great shots from that day but, this is my favorite. Took this as the day was winding down. . I have been a photographer for 50 years. As such there is always something new to learn. A new technique an old technique that you learn to apply to new equipment, I used to have a Hassleblad medium format camera and thought was the greatest thing in the world. Thought it was so cool when I had a little dark room set up and could develop my own film! Learning photoshop and so many of the other editing software that is out there now. I remember when I bought my first version of photoshop.Spent hours learning it. I was amazed at the things I could do to pictures! It has advanced so much! You never stop learning new tricks with it! Bald Eagle Sunset

Bald Eagle in flight flew right over me during sunset at Barr Lake State Park in Brighton, Colorado. This unique state park has been known as a premier bird-watching area. A trail circles the lake offering prime viewing with a boardwalk that stretches out over the lake. When I learned there were bald eagles in Colorado, I didn’t believe it at first and I never dreamed of getting a shot like this on my first visit there. Believe it or not I have a hard time adventuring outside of my comfort zone sometimes and trying to explore new places. I am sure glad I took the opportunity to check out Barr Lake State Park as it had hundreds of bald eagles at this time when I visited. This was taken with my Canon 90D which has an APS-C 1.6x factor crop sensor shot with my EF100-400mm with a 1.4x III teleconverter. Not the huge lenses many of the photographers had there but plenty of reach. Full disclosure though this image is a composite since the initial shot was taken against the blue sky. I turned around and took the sunset with the eagles’ nest and the Rocky Mountains in the background and created this composite from the two images taken that same day. It was cold and there were still plenty of other photographers out on the boardwalk. It was a bit intimidating as they had a lot of equipment with them and these huge professional lenses, and here I was with my little telephoto lens and not even a full frame camera at that time. I had to laugh when this eagle flew over us and one of the other photographers shouted out, “Nope, too much lens”. Yet, I managed to capture the shot wing tip to wing tip in the frame. I now have a full frame Canon R5 mirrorless camera, and I blame this shot for getting me hooked and wanting to upgrade my equipment. I have gone back to this location every year since and have yet to get anything close to this spectacular shot. It is an amazing experience to watch these large bald eagles fishing over the lake. It is the challenge to capture an image as they snatch a fish up that keeps the adrenaline going even in the cold weather. Even though there have been less bald eagles over the years I will keep going back due to this memorable experience during my first visit there.
